Network Security and Design
There are three main sources of threat to the security of an internal network, external, viral and internal. The internal threat, or "sabotage" is a trust/management issue within a company and is impossible to protect against with technology (the saboteur is likely to be the person who installed the protection, and therefore knows how to avoid the protection).
Viral protection is provided by various software applications on the market, all of which work in broadly similar ways, although they are installed at different points in a network (server, router, client) in order to provide the most efficient protection.
External threats or "hacking" are blocked by different software applications, firewalls, which differ in how they work and where they are installed on a network to provide maximum protection. Firewalls are particularly important when using certain PC operating systems and when using Broadband Internet connections.
